Mussels are seafood with a salty and fresh-sweet flavor. They are a source of minerals, phosphorus, iron, and vitamins. Mussels can be prepared in various ways. They can be eaten raw, but are also very tasty when baked, boiled, or fried. The Zeeland mussels come from the Dutch waters in Zeeland.
The rope-cultured mussel is grown on frayed ropes up to eight meters long. The mussel seed on the ropes is then covered with coarse-meshed socks, which protect the mussels as they attach themselves. Compared to bottom-cultured mussels, rope-cultured mussels are ready for consumption in half the time. These mussels also contain no sand, as they have not lain on the seabed, and their shells are thinner. The rope-cultured mussel from the Netherlands is available from April through July. The mussels obtain all their food from the Zeeland seawater and thus grow naturally into flavorful shellfish.
