Capers are the unopened flower buds of the caper plant. This is a low, wide shrub with branches with thorns. The plant produces beautiful white flowers that are followed by berries with kidney-shaped seeds. The caper plant is cultivated in countries with a Mediterranean climate, such as in France, Spain, and Italy, but also in Western Asia. Ideal for use in salads or in dishes like steak tartare. If the flower is fertilized, a berry is formed. This berry can also be pickled and is known as the caperberry or caper apple. It tastes deliciously fresh as an appetizer, or as a decoration with, for example, carpaccio or vitello tonnato.
