The Cointreau distillery was opened in 1849, in Angers in France and founded by two brothers: Adolphe and Edouard-Jean Cointreau. In 1885 Edouard Cointreau created the original recipe of Cointreau l'Unique after a long search for the perfect orange liqueur. Cointreau is a perfect blend of sweet and bitter orange peels, chosen from the best terroir, for a unique balance of spicy, fresh, and fruity notes. Water, sugar, and alcohol, chosen for their purity, allow space for the full expression of orange aromas. Cointreau is part of more than 500 cocktail recipes, including: Side Car, White Lady, Cosmopolitan, Margarita. The most iconic Cointreau cocktail recipe, The Original Margarita, was created by Margaret Sames in 1948. She said: "A Margarita without Cointreau is not worth its salt".
